Evdokiia Danilovna Efimova’s additional comments on the women’s coat
"I come from another Kangalas family group from Srednei Kolymsk, where we call this garment the kula fur coat with the baryllya (eagle). It is one of the legacies of the peak of the Sakha sewing craft of the 19th century and at the same time a sacred garment that shows reverence for the deity (d’өһөgөj ajyy). The Sakha revered and worshipped the horse. Thus, this coat was made from the special fur of a foal.
The fact that the eagle coat is kept in America has helped us recognize the significance and prestige of our own fur coat. This now aids us in its revival, which we are currently striving for. We sincerely thank the initiators of this project for helping to make our kula fur coat better known, and we very much hope that their efforts will make a great contribution to the development of the material and spiritual culture of the northern and indigenous peoples."
